Monday 28th February - 9AM |

Students from across the UK are sitting outside their schools for a few minutes this morning to demand that the government stops granting licences for new North Sea oil and gas projects.

The action is part of a wave of mini school strikes organised by Students for Survival, a new direct action group set up by school age students in support of Just Stop Oil. The group will stage sit downs outside their schools every Monday and use the opportunity to encourage their classmates to join weekly Zoom calls to learn about civil resistance and join the school strikes.[1]

Alex, aged 16 from South London said:

“Another day, another IPCC report warning of huge danger ahead and still governments are not acting. It makes it even more urgent that the government puts an end to new North Sea oil and gas and does everything it can to reduce demand for fossil fuels. We can’t carry on burning oil and gas and expecting we can solve the problem later, we need to stop now.

“I really don’t want to be here but my future depends on the right decisions being taken by the government today and in the next 2-3 years and that means stopping oil and gas. There is no future with oil.”

The action comes ahead of the publication by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the second part of its Sixth Assessment Report: Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation & Vulnerability. The report is expected to say that the extent and magnitude of climate change impacts is larger than estimated in previous assessments and that the window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future is rapidly closing. Tamara, aged 14 from North London said:

“The climate crisis is already here and is ruining the lives of millions of people through drought and famine in places like Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen and Madagascar - and it's only going to get worse. Why are we still hooked on fossil fuels? They are directly responsible. ”

Hannah, aged 17 from South London said:

“Young people have not been listened to. We’ve been speaking out about climate collapse, turning up for marches, signing petitions and still not enough is being done. I’m not old enough to vote so how can I make my voice heard? Young people everywhere need to rise up and demand a future. There is no future with oil.”

Supporters of Students for Survival plan to take action with Youth Climate Swarm, Just Stop Oil, Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and many other groups who are all making the same demand of the government. [4]
