SCHOOL STUDENTS STAGE FIFTH WEEK OF SIT-DOWNS TO DEMAND AN END TO NORTH SEA OIL AND GAS

21st March 2022, 11:30am

Students from London and Liverpool sat outside their schools for a few minutes this morning to demand that the government stops granting licences for new North Sea oil and gas projects.

Today’s action is the fifth in a series of mini school strikes organised by Students for Survival, a new direct action group set up by school-age students in support of Just Stop Oil. The group will stage sit-downs outside their schools every Monday and use the opportunity to encourage their classmates to join weekly Zoom calls to learn about civil resistance and join the school strikes.[1]

Alex, aged 16 from South London said:

“I’m horrified by the thought that by the time I’m in my thirties the world may not be able to grow enough food to feed everyone and lots of people are going to die because it's too hot.”

“We have been repeatedly let down by the adults and so it's up to us now to demand change. We haven’t got time to leave this. Our lives depend on the government taking the necessary action in the next two to three years to avoid climate collapse and that means stopping oil and gas.”

The action comes after a series of news reports that together show climate breakdown happening much faster than expected, increasing the likelihood that we are closer to key climate tipping points than previously thought.[2]

Tamara, aged 14 from North London said:

“The climate crisis is already here and is ruining the lives of millions of people through drought and famine in places like Ethiopia, Somalia, Yemen and Madagascar - and it's only going to get worse. Why are we still hooked on fossil fuels? They are directly responsible.”

Supporters of Students for Survival plan to take action with Youth Climate Swarm, Just Stop Oil, Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and many other groups who are all making the same demand of the government.[3]
