Students from across the UK are sitting outside their schools for a few minutes this morning to demand that the government stops granting licences for new North Sea oil and gas projects.

The action is the third in a series of mini school strikes organised by Students for Survival, a new direct action group set up by school age students in support of Just Stop Oil. The group will stage sit downs outside their schools every Monday and use the opportunity to encourage their classmates to join weekly Zoom calls to learn about civil resistance and join the school strikes.[1]

Zak, aged 15 from Norwich said:

“Last week's IPCC report and the war in Ukraine make it clearer than ever that the government needs to put an end to new North Sea oil and gas and do everything it can to reduce demand for fossil fuels.

“I shouldn’t have to do this, but there is no time to mess around. By the time I’m able to vote it will be too late to prevent climate catastrophe. There is no future with oil.”

The action comes after last week's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Impacts Report, which UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres described as an "atlas of human suffering". The report stated that humans and nature are being pushed beyond their abilities to adapt and that over 40% of the world's population is "highly vulnerable" to the climate crisis. [2]

Hannah, aged 17 from South London said:

“The time for marches, petitions and small actions is over. We haven’t been listened to and we are still heading for climate collapse. Students across the UK need to rise up now to demand a future. Drilling for new oil and gas and giving money to fossil fuel companies is completely unacceptable if we want to live in a habitable world. Just Stop Oil.”

Supporters of Students for Survival plan to take action with Youth Climate Swarm, Just Stop Oil, Extinction Rebellion, Insulate Britain and many other groups who are all making the same demand of the government. [3]
